Welcome to YogaWellbeing
Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of yoga are postures (a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility) and breathing.
The practice originated in India about 7,000 years ago, and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways. Yoga is now commonplace in leisure centres, health clubs, schools, hospitals and surgeries and its health benefits are well recognised.
The results of dozens of scientific trials have been published on yoga and suggest that it is a safe and effective way to increase physical activity – especially strength, flexibility and balance. There’s also evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains – including lower back pain – depression and stress.
Yoga is suitable for everyone – no matter what age, gender or level of fitness – and there is a type of yoga for everyone too – older people, those who are generally unfit, people with disabilities, children and even the superfit.
But there is no need to become a yoga expert, or to be super bendy, or able to get into a perfect or complete posture. Great benefits happen with regular practice anyway – no matter how inflexible you think you are!
YogaWellbeing yoga classes are held across Tyne and Wear at various times and venues.
